Hi Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back for 2019.  Room 2 will be opening in Term 2, 2019 with the next Year 1 class at Papatoetoe Central School.

Our Year 6 buddy class

Our Year 6 buddy class (Room 33) surprised us today with a visit and they gave each child in Room 2 a homemade card and an Easter egg. We have decided Room 2 has the best buddy class in the world!

Cultural day

Hiwi the kiwi

Hiwi the kiwi visited us and performed a show all about fishing and water safety. Here is a safety message written by Daniel and Max models a life jacket.

Manu tū

We have been reading a book about Maui and the last page showed manu tū. Manu tū were flown above pa sites as a form of communication. "That's very clever" said Leo. We all agreed. We decided to make our own kites and have a go at flying them. Luckily it was a windy day.

 

Duffy books in schools

We are lucky enough to be supported by the Duffy books in schools programme. Soon all children in Room 2 will be given free books to take home. Here are Harjaap and Melenoa with their books.

Bubbles

We have been reading a book about bubbles this week, so we thought we would try blowing bubbles ourselves.

Casey the Caterpillar

In Room 2 we are using the "Casey the Caterpillar" programme for handwriting. We learn a set of shapes, such as "tall stick" or "short stick" or "tunnel" and then use these shapes to form the letters. This helps the children to develop the correct letter formation. For a description of the shapes and the letters see the document below.

Ideas for maths in Year 1

Diwali Diya Lamps

We made our own Diya lamps out of clay. First we rolled the clay into a ball, then we pushed our thumbs into it and then we shaped the clay with our fingers. Finally we painted the lamps and added the candles. We finished them in time to take home on Diwali.

Christmas show

For the Christmas show Room 2 will be learning these songs

Our 100 day party!

We have been counting the days we have been at school. When we got to 100 we decided to have a 100 day party!
We started by counting to 100 and placing 100 objects on our tables. We followed this up by making a special 100 day crown and then had a picnic of yummy fruit.

Elections in Room 2

We have been learning about The New Zealand elections.

We learned about the beehive and Parliament.

We have been noticing all the signs in our neighbourhood.

We decided to hold our own election in Room 2.
We voted and chose 7 people to be our 'Members of Parliament' or decision makers.

Our decision makers decided we would go on the scooters in the afternoon. 

The following week we chose 7 new 'Members of Parliament'. Here we are giving our decision makers or MP's some ideas about what we can do.

The 'MP's' chose i-pads in the afternoon. I wonder what it will be next week?

Fireman visit

The firemen came to visit the school with their truck. It was awesome!

Making music

We have been making music in Room 2. We have been learning about keeping the beat and now we tried out the xylophones. We are playing "Hot Cross Buns".
