Buddy reading with Room 13

It was such a lovely sunny day that we decided to visit our Year 3 buddy class and do some buddy reading outside.

We took turns reading our books to each other.

Fractions

We have started to look at fractions in Room 2. we know they are magic numbers made up of two numbers. We know the bottom number tells us the number of pieces it has been cut into and the top number tells us how many pieces we have. 

We started dividing paper chocolate bars. Then if we got the question right we got  a little piece of real chocolate. 

Then we made pizzas and divided them into fractions. Here Kaleb and Gowri show us their pizzas.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Sue from St John Ambulance came to teach us what an ambulance does to keep people safe.

She showed us the oxygen bottle and mask.

Get out of the way quickly! Ambulance coming through.

Zoe dressed up as a paramedic all ready to go.

We got to feel the oxygen coming out of the mask. 

Performing for assembly

Room 2's turn to run assembly. We performed the waiata "Hine e hine" and "Tutira mai nga iwi". We also shared a slide show with the rest of the school. All the children confidently remembered their lines, sang beaurifully and spoke into the microphones with confidence. Ka pai!

Our 100 day party

We have been counting the number of 

days we have been at school. When we reached 100 we had a 100 day party.

We also collected 100 objects and placed them on the tables.

 

Today we met a real New Zealand Explorer!

Our topic is New Zealand explorers. Today we got a chance to skype with Dr Lars Brabyn, an Antarctic researcher who lives in Hamilton. He makes regular trips to remote parts of Antartica so we prepared a list of questions. We took turns asking Dr Brabyn our questions and he had some very funny stories to tell.

Measurement in Friday maths.

Today in Friday maths we were problem solving using measurement.

Can we create a bridge that will span the river? Yes we can!

We can make playdough worms which are longer and shorter than the picture.

This worm became super long!

Who can make the tallest tower? We have a problem-they keep falling over.

Yazaan has a solution. Make the base of the tower stronger by joining the blocks together in an alternating pattern.
