Matariki

This week is the celebration of the Maori new year Matariki.

Matariki is the name of a cluster of stars in the sky commonly know as 'The Seven Sisters'.
Many years ago, Maori people believed that if the stars are shinning brightly then there would be plenty of food if they are dull there would not be.

During Matariki people will:

- Make and fly kites
- Share stories with friends and Whanau (family)
- Play string games
- Eat a Hangi
- Show respect to Papatuanuku - the earth mother
- Plant new plants to grow new food
- Weaving - out of flax
- Sing many waiata

And the list goes on.  On room 2 we will try some of these activities.
